EL HOUSE
Completion year: 2017 Gross built area: 343 m2 (cubiertos) Project location: Mendoza Capital, Mendoza, Argentina Program / Use: Residential architecture - Photo credits: Luis Abba
Set on a double-corner lot with frontage on three streets, the house adapts to the site’s steep natural slopes by unfolding across two floors that clearly and fluidly organize its functions. The main entrance is located on the western side, where a staircase connects to the lower floor, articulating the spatial journey between areas. The upper floor houses the secondary bedrooms, each connected to the garden through private terraces that enhance the relationship with the outdoors. The ground floor contains the social spaces and the main bedroom, arranged as independent volumes interspersed with patios that blur the boundaries between interior and exterior. This configuration allows the house to merge with the garden, encouraging cross ventilation and the entry of natural light. The home features two distinct material languages: the lower level is built with exposed cyclopean concrete walls, in continuity with the surrounding stones and vegetation, while the upper volumes—lighter and white—rest on a smooth concrete structure, creating a serene and elegant contrast. More exposed to climatic conditions, the upper volume incorporates a perforated solar screen on the west side that softens the light and filters the mountain breezes. The construction system is completed with a thermal envelope that ensures interior comfort. The house offers an intimate and quiet living experience, in dialogue with the landscape through fragmented pathways, green courtyards, and an austere architecture that draws from materiality, climate, and territory.
